Pain catastrophizing is a negatively exaggerated mental process that occurs while one experiences actual or expected pain. According to the communal coping model, pain catastrophizing is used as a means to obtain others’ support, sympathy, or attention in interpersonal situations. Previous studies have demonstrated that pain catastrophizing affects the interpersonal problems. Recently, it has been proposed from the developmental perspective that an internal working model (i.e., attachment) formed during childhood may continue until adulthood and affect pain catastrophizing. Thus, this study examined the effect of pain catastrophizing and insecure attachment on the interpersonal problems in chronic pain patients. Additionally, examined ambious faces perception according to dimention of insecure attachment. A total of 41 patients with chronic pain seeking treatment in a university pain management center located in Seoul, Korea were invited to participate in the study. The participants completed self-report questionnaires and performed a task on the recognition of emotionally ambiguous facial expressions. Emotionally ambiguous facial expressions were randomly presented by mixing happiness with one of three different facial expressions (anger, fear, sadness) at one of five different ratios (70:30, 60:40, 40:60, 30:70). Results showed that interpersonal problems had positive associations pain catastrophizing and insecure attachment. Another result demonstrated that anxious attachment had greatest significant impact on interpersonal problems. Additionally, indicated that chronic pain patients with high anxious attachment perceived ambiguous faces more negatively compared to those with low anxious attachment. The results of this study suggests that an anxious attachment has a negative bias on ambiguous faces perception, those was the most influential factor in interpersonal problems with chronic pain patients.
