본 연구는 영화 ‘위대한 개츠비’에 나타난 여자 캐릭터 분장 코디네이션을 비교한 연구로서 아카데미 의상상 수상작이며 보다 전문화된 1974년과 2013년작을 바탕으로 1920년대의 분장코디네이션을 비교분석하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 이를 통해 영화 분장 코디네이션의 캐릭터 재현장치로서의 가치를 재확인하는 동시에 제작 연도에 따라 시대적 트렌드를 반영하는 사회문화적 가치를 인식하는 데 연구의 의의가 있다.
연구방법으로는 1974년과 2013년 영화 작품의 중복되는 장면을 데이지 뷰캐넌(Daisy Buchanan), 머틀 윌슨(Myrtle Wilson), 조던 베이커(Jordan Baker) 각각 6개, 5개, 5개 선정하고 원작소설의 장면과 중복되는 영화 장면을 중심으로 1920년대 분장 코디네이션, 즉 패션, 헤어, 메이크업과 제작당시인 1970년대와 2013년의 트렌드와도 비교분석하였다. 이를 위해 국내외 문헌 및 선행연구, 인터넷 사이트를 중심으로 이론고찰 및 사진 자료 수집이 이루어졌다.
연구결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 패션에 있어서 여름이 배경임에도 불구하고 1974년작의 경우 모든 장면에서 긴팔 디자인을 선택하고 파티 장면을 제외한 장면에서는 민소매는 거의 등장하지 않는다. 전체적으로 같은 디자인의 반복이 있는 편이다. 액세서리 중 귀걸이는 데이지만 착용하고 이를 제외한 액세서리 종류는 다양하게 등장한다. 반면 2013년작에서는 시스루나 민소매같은 좀 더 노출에 과감해진 디자인과 소재를 사용하고 세 명 모두 다양한 액세서리를 코디하였다.
둘째, 헤어스타일에 있어서 원작에 가까운 헤어 컬러를 표현한 작품으로 데이지와 머틀은 2013년작, 베이커는 1974년작이라고 할 수 있었다. 1974년작의 경우 여자 캐릭터들의 거의 웨이브가 있는 슁글 보브 스타일에 컬러선택은 명도 차이가 있으나 모두 브라운계열을 선택하였다. 2013년작에서는 데이지와 베이커가 웨이브가 거의 없는 짧은 보브, 머틀은 중간길이의 웨이브 보브 커트였고 컬러는 각각 블론드, 블랙, 레드 컬러로 차이점이 있었다.
셋째, 메이크업에 있어서 원작에 가까운 캐릭터는 데이지와 머틀은 2013년작의 이미지에 베이커는 1974년작의 이미지에 가깝다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 1974년작은 눈썹을 모두 제거하고 아이브로우를 그리고 섀도우로 아이홀을 강조하는 1920년의 트렌드를 반영하되 립 라인은 크게 신경쓰지 않고 1970년대 트렌드인 립글로스를 사용하였다. 2013년작의 경우 1920년대의 트렌드인 과하게 내려 그린 형태의 아이브로우와 얼굴에 찍은 점, 립 라인을 표현하였으나 2013년의 트렌드인 자연스러운 피부표현과 각자 개성을 표현한 인조 속눈썹 사용과 립 라인의 변화를 볼 수 있었다. 네일의 경우 데이지는 2013년작에서 화이트 프렌치 네일을, 머틀은 두 작품 모두 레드컬러의 풀 코트, 베이커는 2013년작에서 레드와 화이트컬러의 프렌치 네일이 표현되어 2013년의 트렌드도 반영되었음을 알 수 있었다.
상기의 내용을 통하여 영화 ‘위대한 개츠비’의 분장 코디네이션을 비교분석 함에 있어서 같은 원작의 작품이더라도 감독의 특성, 협업하는 브랜드나 회사, 인원, 제작연도에 따라 시대적인 트렌드를 반영함으로써 새롭게 재해석되기도 하며 그로 인한 분장 코디네이션의 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다.
시대적인 분장 코디네이션, 원작과 일치도, 리메이크 작품과의 비교연구로 현대적인 해석을 통해 분장 코디네이션의 이미지를 실현했음을 살펴봄으로써 앞으로 시대적 트렌드를 반영하는 사회문화적 가치를 인식시키는 영화 분장 코디네이션의 연구에 있어서 기초자료를 제공할 것으로 기대한다.

This paper aimed to compare and analyze the makeup coordination in the 1920s on the basis of the movie produced in 1974 and 2013, which acquired an Academy Award for Best Costume Design and was more specialized, as a comparison analysis of female characters’ makeup coordination observed in the movie ‘The Great Gatsby’. The analysis results of this paper will be significant as the identification of the social and cultural value of makeup coordination reflecting the trend of the times depending on the production years of movies as well as reconfirmation of its value as the system to reproduce characters in
the movies.
As the methodology, this paper selected six scenes with Daisy Buchanan, five scenes with Myrtle Wilson, and five scenes with Jordan Baker, which overlapped in the movies produced in 1974 and 2013. With the focus on the scenes in the original fiction and the scenes overlapped in both movies, makeup coordination in the 1920s?including fashion, hairstyle, and makeup?and the trends in the 1970s and 2013 when the movies were produced were compared and analyzed. To this end, theories were examined and photos were collected mainly through the review of literature and existing research and Internet sites in Korea and abroad.
The analysis results are described below.
For fashion style, all scenes in the movie produced in 1974 selected long-sleeved costumes even though the background was summer; no sleeveless costumes were used except in the party scene. The same designs were generally repeated throughout the movie. Only Daisy put on earrings and a variety of other accessories. The design and materials became more daring in exposure in the movie produced in 2013, and all three subjects coordinated a variety of accessories.
The movie expressing hair colors more similarly to the original fiction was the movie produced in 2013 for Daisy and Myrtle and that produced in 1974 for Baker. Most female characters had shingle bob style with brown curls, having a difference in brightness in the movie produced in 1974. In the movie produced in 2013, Daisy and Baker adopted the short bob style with almost no curls, and Myrtle had a curled bob cut of medium length. They showed a difference in hair color: blond, black, and red, respectively.
Next, the makeup of Daily and Myrtle in the movie produced in 2013 was similar to that in the original fiction, and the makeup of Baker in the movie produced in 1974 to the original fiction. The movie produced in 1974 reflected the trend in the 1920s, which drew eyebrows after clearly removing them, and emphasized the eyelids with shadow but didn’t pay significant attention to lip lines, using lip glosses, the trend in the 1970s. The movie produced in 2013 expressed the eyebrows drawn excessively low and a dot painted on the face and lip line, the trend in the 1920s, but showed a change of lip line, used artificial eyelashes, expressing the personality of each character, and expressed natural skin, reflecting the trend in 2013. For nails, Daisy adopted the white French nail style in the movie produced in 2013, and Myrtle selected a full coat in red in both movies. Baker adopted red and white French nails in the movie produced in 2013. This indicates the reflection of the trend in 2013.
In accordance with the analysis by comparing the makeup coordination in the movie ‘The Great Gatsby,’ the movie works based on the same original fiction can be interpreted differently by reflecting the trends of the times depending on the characteristics of directors, supporting brands or companies, number of characters, and production years. Accordingly, the makeup coordination shows differences.
This paper will provide the basic data for research on makeup coordination in the movies, which helps to recognize the social and cultural values reflecting the trends of the times by identifying the realization of makeup coordination images through modern comparison and analysis of makeup coordination of the times and consistency to the original fiction, as well as comparison to remade works.
