A Study on Environmental Colors According to Feng-Shui Theory in Jeju Island
- Focusing on Residential, Educational and Commercial Environments -

Abstract

This thesis tried to analyze the location of the residential, educational and commercial environment in Jeju region by applying the formal logic of Feng Shui and to present a win-win environmental and colorful design by comparing the shape and color of buildings. Noting the color and shape, the important factors of spatial design, the colorful environment is analyzed and an improvement plan is presented by applying the ObangJeongsaeknon and Ohaengnon of Feng Shui theory that the human residence and natural environment may be harmonious.
The objectives of research were classified into residential environment, educational environment and commercial environment according to the type of location in Jeju region. The residential environment taken for objective was the settlement in Yeon-dong, Sinjeju-si, the educational environment was 12 day-care centers and the commercial environment was 13 luxury hotels located in Jeju-si and Seogwipo-si.
Followings are the summary of the research.
First, as for residential environment, the settlement in all quarters of Yeon-dong, Sinjeju-si, an alternative form of building was presented that can achieve harmony with the surrounding topography. As for the shape of building or roof, it took the body of Mok shape(?) to the Eastward, as there is active earthly energy of Mok(木). It took the body of Geum shape(?·?) to the Westward, as there is active earthly energy of Geum(金). It took the body of Hwa shape(△) to the Southward, as there is active earthly energy of Hwa(火). It took the body of Su shape(?) to the Northward, as there is active earthly energy of Su(水).
The color design fit for the region was presented through color simulation by applying ObangJeongsaeknon. It was presented to design with colors nicely-paired with directions to be able to receive the earthly energy and vitality of the region ; blue to the Eastward, white to the Westward, red to the Southward and black to the Northward.
Second, as for the educational environment, the location and space of childcare centers were analyzed by applying directional topography, morphology and chromatology. It was proposed to prepare the shape of building fit for the characteristics of the region in terms of Feng Shui considering the environment to be able to receive a good effect of the region. Colorful design should also be applied to the colors of inside and outside of building considering the environment and direction of the region to be able to receive a good spirit. This attempt is in the same context with being under the influence of topography from the aspect of Feng Shui and also applied to the shape of the building and the environment of color inside.
Lastly, as for the commercial environment, the location and space of 13 luxurious tourist hotels were analyzed in terms of Feng Shui. It was found out not to be the location to receive a good earthly energy. Most hotels considered only the tourists'' convenience for access. Especially the color of the outer wall emphasiezed only the visual effect never considering in terms of Feng Shui. An environmental and colorful design was presented that can win-win together with the shape of building.

Especially colorful design was presented to win-win with the shape of building as the entrance of the building is the passage of energy.
In conclusion, if the locational environment in Feng Shui is regarded as same as being under the influence of topography, the win-win between the shape and color of a building is very important because that is able to provide the members with pleasant and healthy environment. This research might be available as a criteria for plan and design in the field of housing lot in Feng Shui.
