<-현장>연작은 도시의 변화하는 공간에 대한 사진으로 <공사 현장>, <철거 현장>, <재건축 현장>으로 구성된다. <-현장> 작업은 신도시 건설현장, 재개발 현장, 아파트 재건축 현장과 같이 일반적으로 접근이 어려운 도시의 공간에 들어가서 ‘개입’이라는 본인의 예술적 행위를 더해 그 공간이 존재했음을 증명하고 시각화하는 작업이다. 본 논문은 <-현장> 작업을 중심으로 개인의 경험과 환경에 기반한 사진예술로서의 결과물을 구상하고 실현하는 과정을 담고 있다. 본 논문은 사진 작업 과정과 결과물에서 발견된 도시공간의 생성과 소멸의 과정을 연구하며 도시의 본래의 의미와 기능의 문제를 시각적으로 제기하여 환기하는데 연구의 목적을 두고 있다.
본인은 우리나라의 1세대 대 단지 아파트가 건설되고 재건축이 진행된 서울 도심의 아파트 촌에 태어나 살아왔다. 오랫동안 살았던 공간이 통째로 없어지고 그 곳에 새로운 공간이 생기는 변화를 경험하였고 이를 통해 느낀 상실감과 기억을 기반 하여 사진 작업들을 구상하고 진행하였다. 이후에 대대적인 도시 재개발 사업과 신도시 개발 사업, 주상 복합 지구 건설 등 점차 빠른 속도로 진행되는 도시의 변화에 많은 영감을 받았다.
<공사 현장>은 신도시 건설현장에서 하나의 도시가 생성되는 과정을 아파트 건설현장의 콘크리트 공간에서 건설에 사용되는 자재를 공간에 재배치하는 개입을 더해 기록했으며 이를 통해 원래의 기능을 벗어난 공간과 자재의 낯선 모습을 보여주고자 했다.
<철거 현장>은 도시 재개발현장에서 철거예정인 건물에 빨간 방을 만들고 그 방이 철거되면서 외부로 드러나고 쪼개지다 사라지는 과정을 추적하여 기록했으며 이를 통해 재개발이라는 거대 국가 주도 사업에 의해 변화하는 도시의 모습을 들여다보고자 했다.
<재건축 현장>은 대단지 아파트 재건축현장에서 아파트 한 층의 전체 벽에 빨간색을 칠하고 철거가 진행되며 변화하는 빨간 벽의 변화와 주변 환경을 촬영 하였다. 이를 통해 하나의 도시가 소멸되는 과정과 개발과 보존이라는 도시의 아이러니를 보여주고자 했다.
<-현장>작업에서‘현장’과 ‘개입’은 작업을 이해하는데 있어 중요하다. 현장은 변화하는 도시의 과정으로서의 공간이다. 현장은 모든 <-현장>작업의 근원지이며 <-현장>작업이 말하는 도시의 생성과 소멸이 일어나는 곳이다. 본인은 각각의 현장에서 개입이라는 예술적 행위를 통해 피사체와 교류하고 그로인한 예측불가 한 상황을 기록함으로서 사실이나 역사로서의 기록만이 아닌 다양한 측면에서 사진을 해석할 수 있는 여지를 만들었다.
본 논문은 <공사 현장>, <철거 현장>, <재건축 현장>으로 진행된 <-현장> 연작의 작업배경과 구상, 작업을 진행하는 과정과 결과물, 결과물에 대한 연구이다.
본 논문은 신도시 건설현장부터 재개발현장, 아파트 재건축현장에 이르기 까지 십여년의 시간에 걸쳐 진행한 <-현장>연작은 도시의 변화에 관한 기록이다. 또한 2000년대 초반의 부동산 투기 열풍으로 광적으로 시행되었던 신도시 개발사업과 재건축사업, 2000년대 후반에 찾아온 미국 발 경기 침체에 의한 부동산 시장 불황과 개발 중단과 그로인한 재개발 현장의 무수한 폐허 등 도시개발의 황폐한 광경을 바라보는 본인의 시선을 담고 있다. 사진은 다른 매체와는 다르게 결과물에 작가의 행위와 노동력, 과정의 인과관계가 쉽게 드러나지 않는다. 본인은 이러한 매체의 한계를 극복하기 위해서 단순히 찍는 행위만을 수행하는 기존의 작가의 역할에 벗어나서 직접 현장에 개입하고 예측하지 못했던 상황을 사진으로 기록하고 탐구하는 방식으로 새로운 사진의 표현방식을 제시하였다.

The series <-site> is photography about changing spaces in a city and composed of <Construction site>, <Demolition site> and <Reconstruction site>. <-site> is created after going into spaces where one cannot easily find an access such as a construction site, redevelopment site and an apartment reconstruction site and adding the researcher’s artistic activity called ‘intervention’, proves the existences of the original building at those site and visualizes them. This thesis includes how the result of photography art based on personal experiences and environments is developed and realized by focusing on the works of <-site>, and studies on what the researcher discovered from his practice, the processes of creation and extinction in a city, while aiming to recall the original meaning and function of a city by suggesting problems visually.
The researcher was born and raised in the apartment complex in Seoul where a big apartment project was firstly progressed in Korea. Thus, the researcher experienced where he had lived for a long time is disappeared into a new place. His photography has been progressed on his feeling of loss from that experience and his memory. Then, the researcher has been motivated by the rapid development of a city.
In <Construction site>, how a new city is created in the construction site of a new town is recorded by rearranging materials, used in concrete spaces of an apartment construction site, in a space in order to show unfamiliar aspects of spaces and materials out of the original functions.
In <Demolition site>, a red room is created in a building that will be torn down in a redevelopment site and the process of its demolition when the building is torn down is recorded in order to examine how a city is changed under a massive business undertaken by the nation, called redevelopment.
In <Reconstruction site>, a whole floor of a building in a reconstruction site is painted in red, and when demolition is progressed, the changes in red walls and the surrounding environment are recorded in order to show the process of how a city is vanished and an irony of a city where redevelopment and preservation happen at the same time.
In the series <-site>, ‘a site’ and ‘intervention’ are important keywords to understand works. A site is a space existing as a process of changing city. A site is the source of all the <-site> works and the place where creation and extinction of a city, talked in <-site>, happen. The researcher exchanges with a subject at each site through an artistic activity, called intervention, and records unexpected situations in order to make a possibility of interpreting photography in diverse aspects rather than limit it just as a fact or the historical reference.
This thesis is a study about the background, process of developing and result of the series <-site>, composed of <Construction site>, <Demolition site> and <Reconstruction site>. The series <-site>, progressed from a construction site of a new city to a redevelopment site and apartment redevelopment site for 10 years, is the record of a city’s change. Moreover, the thesis includes what the researcher sees from the development of a new city and redevelopment business, implemented with the fever of speculation in real estates in the early 2000’s, and the countless ruins of a redevelopment site from the depression in the real estate market and the discontinuation of development after America’s economic recession in the late 2000’s. Unlike other mediums, photography does not easily reveal an act and effort of a photographer and the cause-and-effect relationship of a progress. Therefore, the researcher attempts to break the existing role of a photographer and suggest a new way of presenting photography by intervening in an actual site, recording unexpected situations and studying them in order to overcome the limit of photography as a medium.
