The Effect of a Teaching Method Using Parts of Speech Graphic Organizers on Korean EFL High and Middle School Students’ English Grammar Acquisition

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of grammar using parts of speech graphic organizers on grammatical acquisition in Korean high and middle school students. The application of part of speech graphic organizers of as a strategy to teach a basic grammar in high and middle school students in Korea is to help learners in basic and intermediate levels acquire information more easily, motivate students, clarify and organize basic conceptional ideas of part of speech in English grammar and improve the memory of what they learned for a long time(Bromley, Devitis, Modlo, 1999). The participants of this research are made up of high and middle school students interested in learning English grammar voluntarily. The experiment of this study was conducted on 25 Korean middle and high school students in M-church classroom in Seoul. The period of this experiment was 8 weeks long and each class was composed of one hour ,including a twenty- minute test. The test was assigned twice a week. The data set was obtained and analyzed using SPSS 19.0 through pretest and posttest of English basic grammar.
The results of the research are summarized as follows. There are four meaningful differences from this research. High and middle school students involved in this research showed meaningful improvement in 4 parts-the distinction of 8 parts of speech, adjective and adverb, adjectival and adverbial phrases and noun clauses, relative clauses and subordinate clauses in the sentence-of English grammar but showed little improvement in other parts. That means the teaching method by using part of speech graphic organizers is likely to be effective as the instruction strategy to improve grammar ability of low achieving high and middle Korean students.
