Objective: To prove that the balance control trainer (BCT) could be an additive balance assessment tool in subacute stroke patients.
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was designed. The subjects consisted of 38 subacute stroke patients who were able to stand without assistance. All patients were assessed using the BCT (BalPro) within 1?20 weeks after the stroke. Balance was assessed using Berg balance scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), 10-meter walking test (10 mWT), 6-minute walk test (6 mWT), and the Korean version of the modified Barthel index (K-MBI).
Results: There were statistically significant linear correlations between BCT score and BBS (r = 0.698, p < 0.001). Moderate to excellent correlation was shown between BCT score and each 11 of 14 BBS items. Three items of BBS did not showed any correlations; sitting unsupported, stand-to-sit, and turning to look behind. There were moderate correlations between BCT scores and other secondary outcome parameters except for the K-MBI. There were positive and moderate correlations between BCT score and the 6 mWT (r = 0.392, p = 0.048). There were negative and moderate correlations between BCT score and the TUG (r = ?0.471, p = 0.006) and between BCT score and the 10 mWT (r = ?0.437, p = 0.012). There was no statistical correlation between BCT score and the K-MBI (r = 0.281 p = 0.087).
Conclusion: Balance control training using the BCT (BalPro) could be a useful additive balance assessment tool in subacute stroke patients.
