Playground is frequently used for physical and sports activity by students as well as by common people, which is constructed with various cover materials on the ground. In addition, ground temperature is important factor for sports activity. Temperature may be influenced by cover materials on playground. Thus, surface temperature of playground depending on cover materials was investigated in the playgrounds of Kyungpook National University, Sangju campus in Sangju and Youngho elementary school in Andong in Gyeongbuk province, Korea, where were constructed with various cover materials [bare field, zoysiagrass (Zoysiajaponica) turf field, urethane track, concrete field, epoxy field, asphalt road, and artificial turf field]. Temperatures of surface and one meter height above ground were measured 4 times per day at 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00 at Sangju campus of Kyungpook national university from May to October, 2014 and at 07:0, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00 at Andong elementary school from June to September, 2015. Surface temperature was different depending on cover materials and observed time. Surface temperature was lower at grounds with bare and zoysiagrass turf than grounds with other cover materials. Higher surface temperature site was different depending on observed time. Urethane track and artificial turf ground were hotter than other grounds at 12:00 and 15:00. However, concrete and epoxy grounds were hot at 18:00. Temperature at one meter height above ground was the highest in artificial turf ground except at 18:00. Therefore, natural turf, zoysiagrass playground is recommended for athletic performance because surface and above ground temperature was better than playgrounds covered with other materials.
