The stability, control, and maneuvering characteristics of submarines and other submerged vehicles are determined by performing rotating arm captive-model experiments, and hydrodynamic analyses. From the results of the captive model experiments and analyses, the hydrodynamic forces and moments are measured and calculated, and the appropriate hydrodynamic coefficients are determined.
In addition, a calculation method for estimating the linear hydrodynamic derivatives acting on Submarine is proposed and some of the estimated linear hydrodynamic derivatives are compared with results to examine dynamic stability.
The procedure described for the prediction of submarine maneuverability is based on the calculation of the hydrodynamic coefficients in the equations of motion according to Gertler and Hagen(1967). Although these equations of motion are applied to the evaluation of model tests, they are also used for the analytical calculation procedure to allow the direct comparison of calculated and measured coefficients.
In this paper, the captive model test of submerged body using RA test was carried out at the Square Basin. The target model is a submarine with four different types. For the comparison between theory and measurement, hydrodynamic coefficients are calculated according to the described method and Rotating-Arm test. horizontal stability indices of four types were positive value and confirmed to satisfy the horizontal stability. The dynamic stability indices in horizontal planes were also obtained by using hydrodynamic derivatives.
