The major purpose of this study was to explore mediation effects of empathy perception and shame between university student''s selfobject experience and narcissism(healthy narcissism and defensive narcissism) based on Kohut’s self psychology. The total of 565 university students was included for the data analysis, and the data were composed of 226 of male and 339 of female. The main findings are as followings;
First, the mediating effect of empathy perception between selfobject experience and healthy narcissism was analyzed. As a result, effect of selfobject experience and healthy narcissism was partially mediated by empathy perception.
Second, the mediating effect of shame between selfobject experience and defensive narcissism was analyzed. As a result, effect of selfobject experience and defensive narcissism was perfectly mediated by shame.
These results showed that university students basically need to have selfobject experiences much for narcissism. Furthermore it shows empathy perception is an important construct for the healthy narcissism and shame is much for the defensive narcissism. Based on that, this study discussed its implication and limitations.
