The characteristics of the new 21st century might perhaps be multimedia and information shortly, which means new culture and lifestyle. Now, there are a growing demands for multimedia industry more and more. Nevertheless, research on the multimedia is somewhat insufficient because of focusing on the partial analysis rather than comprehensive access to the content. This paper analyzes the musical part and the visual part of the content according to the storytelling using objective factors in addition to the comprehensive analysis of the correlation in integrated approach.
The OST (Original Sound Track) in the film plays a vital role in increasing consensus and concentration to the storyline. The selected 4 animations are classified into 17 Narrative Processes (NP) by using NP Classification Model. For the NPs each having OSTs, the authors have investigated 6 kinds of objective musical elements of the OST such as sound (speech, music, effect), tonality, tempo, range, intensity, and instrumentation. It is found that there are 33.3% common musical elements among all of them for the NPs with OSTs commonly. Among them, it is also found that there are 71.9% of common properties of the musical element. This research is meaningful by firstly showing that there are common properties of objective musical elements in each NP and the corresponding OST.
And, relationship between OST and visual story telling (VST) of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ animation is analyzed step by step in the view of features. The OST is classified into 4 steps (Introduction, Bridge Passage, Climax, Ending) through listening test of music specialists. After that, the following conclusions are found in the detail analysis of each steps. There are characteristics such as visual and musical dynamics in the Climax part, the function-specific camera shots and composition of the images, musical passage matching a character to remind the character and raising emotion, using slow rhythm while dancing turn, and using camera Long Shot (LS) in the descending melody.
Finally, the research methods and contents are to derive the common factors through the analysis of correlation between OST and VST. Specially, OST ‘A Whole New World’ of animation ''Aladdin'' are analyzed step by step after classifying into 4 steps (Introduction, Bridge Passage, Climax, Ending) through listening test of music specialists. As a result, there are unstable introduction stage due to the dynamic medium, reminiscent of images through a particular instrument, the various instruments used in accordance with the characteristics of each image, function-specific camera shot techniques. The matching rate between OST and VST is 70.58% which is high. On the other hand, it is also shown that results are very similar compared to that of OST ''Beauty and the Beast'' of animation Beauty and the Beast.
The implicative purpose of this study is to provide guidelines for integrated analysis research of VST and OST in animation to induce the response of audience according to the storyline. This research shows the meaning of each and inter-relationship of OST and VST according to story development for providing the story world of animation to audience more perfectly.
