The purpose of this study was to build Functions Thesaurus to manage records of elementary, middle and high school in Korea properly. This process was called School Functions Thesaurus. School Functions Thesaurus should be studied to solve the problem of Record Classification in Record Management as an improvement method. For this reason this study conducted some case studies such as Literature review, Australian Governments'' Interactive Functions Thesaurus(AGIFT) and National Archives of Korea Functions Thesaurus. It also proposed the thesaurus concerning business names from School Common unit assignment mainly. The process of this suggestion consisted of 5 steps.
The first step of this study was to establish the rules and define terms referring to the international standards such as ISO 2788, ISO 5964, ISO 25964 and the National Guidelines of National Archives Thesaurus. In the second step, terms were collected through School common unit assignment, Records Disposition Schedule, Records Managements Standard Table and 16 types of School business manual used in School. In the third step, terms were classified into each sections that Used For, Broader Term, Narrower Term, Related Term, USE. After those steps, this study was examined by thesaurus experts and Records managers. In the last step, this study contained the standard of the thesaurus construction and study process. The result of this study was also specified in this step.
The School Functions Thesaurus, which is composed of these processes, performed similar businesses but served as a bridge between the businesses described differently. It also provided currently used business name in instead of past used one so that it assisted users to manage unified record keeping. The features obtained through this study was as follows.
First, Descriptor of School Functions Thesaurus consisted of business name. The business name of School Functions Thesaurus was limited to unit assignment under Records Managements Standard Table. For this reason, Descriptor had different characteristics from common terms.
Second, the hierarchical relationship of School Functions Thesaurus was based on organizational structure through Business Reference Model in Local Education. Business Reference Model in Local Education signified the six levels of education hierarchy belonging to the 17 policy fields under the Business Reference Model and each hierarchy terms functioned to instruct where Descriptor was included in.
Third, School Functions Thesaurus had numerous UF relationship under Descriptor and a number of USE relationship under Non-Descriptor. unit assignment which is Descriptor on School Functions Thesaurus had several business process. Also there was generated, devided, and combined unit assignment through maintenance process. Consequently, It was not a one-to-one relationship but one-to-many relationship between Descriptor and Non-Descriptor.
On the other hand, there was limitation of getting field verification and test in this study. Hence, it had significance in the fact that the standard, process and method of building a School Functions Thesaurus were suggested in this study. In the future, more specific and developed reserch that includes details and related to Functions thesaurus needs to be conducted.
