전 세계적으로 인가활동의 범위는 지속적으로 확대되고 있다. 그 결과로 식물의 생육지의 소실, 축소 및 질적인 저하를 가속화하였다. 그리고 멸종위기에 직면한 식물의 보전을 위한 보전 활동이 시작되었다. 멸종위기에 처한 식물의 보전을 위한 활동은 다양한 연구 분야의 종합이 필요하다. 보전생물학이라는 연구 분야가 시작되는 계기가 되었다. 주요한 연구 분야의 하나로 분자수준에서 유전적인 다양성을 평가하고 있다. 다른 하나로 현지 외 보전을 위한 인공증식 활동이 있다. 여기에 더해 현지 내 보전을 위해 보전 대상 식물에 대한 생태적 특성과 생활사, 생태적 지위를 비롯한 정보의 수집이 필요하다. 보전대상 식물의 생육지에서 나타나는 특성과 종의 소유하는 특성을 이해하기 위해서는 생태학적인 이론과 가설을 활용할 필요가 있다. 특별히, 멸종위기에 처한 식물의 보전활동의 한 분야로 보전생태학이 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 본 연구에서는 멸종위기야생식물인 3종을 대상으로 한 보전생태학적 연구사례를 제시하였다. 첫 번째로 완전한 이년생의 생활사를 소유하고 유성번식에 의존하는 닻꽃(Halenia corniculata (L.) Cornaz)을 대상으로 한 연구이다. 닻꽃은 유묘와 성체 단계에서 빛에 대한 생태적지위전환이 일어났다. 유묘단계에서 나타나는 내음성으로 주변식물이 생성하는 공간에 정착할 수 있는 주요한 요인이었다. 따라서 닻꽃 개체군의 지속을 위해서는 생활사를 지지할 수 있는 공간의 확보가 중요함을 제안하였다. 두 번째로 영양번식이 주를 이루지만 유성적인 번식 또한 가능한 다년생식물인 갯봄맞이꽃(Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia Fernald)을 대상으로 한 연구이다. 갯봄맞이꽃은 염분, 주기적인 침수, 낮은 토양유기물 및 얕은 토심으로 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 천이가 지연되는 공간에 분포하였다. 종자에 의한 보충과 월동아에 의한 보충의 2가지 기작으로 개체군이 유지되었다. 2가지 보충기작 중 적어도 하나의 기작이 원활하게 이루어지는 개체군은 지속이 가능한 것으로 평가하였다. 특별히 한국의 분포지에서는 적어도 월동아에 의한 보충이 유지될 경우 개체군의 소멸하지 않을 것으로 판단되었다. 갯봄맞이꽃의 보전을 위해서는 개체군을 지속에 관여하는 생육지의 동태를 보전하는 것이 중요함을 제안하였다. 세 번째로 유성번식을 통해 개체군이 유지되는 다년생식물인 산작약(Paeonia obovata Maxim.)을 대상으로 한 연구이다. 이 식물이 특정한 생육지를 선호하지 않고 비교적 넓은 식생환경에 걸쳐 분포함을 확인하였다. 개체군동태 연구를 통해 개체군 내에서도 분포 위치에 따라 서로 다른 동태를 나타냄을 알았다. 그리고 재배실험을 통한 생태적지위에 대한 정보를 확보하였고 이 식물이 자가화합성임을 확인하였다. 그러나 산작약의 분포를 설명하는데 확보된 정보만으로는 한계가 있었다. 비교적 넓은 생태적지위폭을 소유하는 결과를 바탕으로 종자의 확산이 분포를 결정하는 주 요인임을 제안하였다. 결론적으로 보전생태학적인 연구를 통해 멸종위기야생식물이 각각 서로 다른 특성을 소유하고 서로 다른 방향으로 환경요인과 상호작용함을 발견하였다. 뿐만 아니라 멸종위기에 직면하게 된 원인도 차이가 있었다. 그러므로 보전생태학적 연구는 보전 대상 종의 현재 상태를 명확하게 평가하고 적절한 보전계획의 수립과 추진을 위한 핵심적인 도구가 될 수 있다. 마지막으로, 본 연구결과에 기초하여 1) 보전 대상 식물의 생활사를 소유하는지, 2) 어떤 생태적지위를 소유하는지, 3) 개체군의 지속을 위해 환경요인과의 상호작용으로 어떤 생태적 과정을 나타내는지, 4) 번식체가 어떤 과정을 통해 재정착 또는 재생되는지를 이해하는 것이 중요함을 제안한다. 이 4가지 항목에 대한 이해가 충분하다면 위험요인을 제거하고 적절한 계획의 수립과 추진이 가능할 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 향후 개체군의 절멸이 발생하더라도 가장 효과적으로 복원이 가능할 것임을 주장한다.
