Objectives
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using Rome IV criteria on the fatigue and eating habits in children and adolescents.
Methods
This study has been carried out questionnaires with 211 children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years old who were admitted to ○○ University Oriental Medicine Hospital Pediatric departments, from 29th, July, 2016 to 12th, August, 2016. Fatigue and eating habits in children and adolescents were investigated by using the Questionnaire for Eating habits and The PedsQLTM multidimensional fatigue scale(MFS). We used PASW Statistics 18.0 to analyze influence of irritable bowel syndrome on eating habits and fatigue in children and adolescents by using chi-square test, independent t-test, linear regression.
Results
In the total 211 subjects, 29 patients (13.7%) were diagnosed with IBS according to the Rome IV criteria. There was no statistically significant difference in the subscores of the Questionnaire for Eating habits according to the prevalence of IBS. There was a statistically significant difference in general fatigue and cognitive fatigue as a result of comparing the MFS subscores according to the prevalence of IBS.
Conclusion
Irritable bowel syndrome was related with fatigue and eating habits in children and adolescents. Additional research is necessary to confirm this study’s findings.
