오늘날 디지털 기술의 급진적인 발전은 건설 산업 전반에 걸쳐 커다란 영향을 주고 있다. 특히, 건축 설계 분야에서 전통적인 설계 과정에서 시도하지 못했던 새로운 방법들을 시도하고 있고, 대표적인 예로 생성 디자인을 들 수가 있다. 생성디자인은 논리적인 설계가 가능하고 컴퓨터에 의해 디자인이 자동적으로 생성되므로 디자인 생산성이 매우 높은 장점이 있다.
생성 디자인에서 사용되는 알고리즘은 설계자의 논리를 기하학적으로 기술하기 때문에 매개변수가 정량적으로 표현되어야 한다. 그러나 건축설계 과정은 공간을 구축하고 그 관계를 설정하며 실제적인 공간의 배치를 구성하는 공간계획이 중요한 요소이며, 공간계획의 제약요소는 접근성, 쾌적성, 영역성 등 주로 정성적 제약조건들이다.
따라서 본 연구는 정성적 제약조건을 정량화하는 방법을 개발함으로써 형상 생성 및 친환경 디자인 등에 집중되어 있던 생성 디자인 기법이 공간계획까지 확장 될 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.
