This paper deals with gender translation and its relation to translator’s gender identity from a Butlerian perspective. Using Butler’s insights on gender identity and performance theory, this thesis delineates how contemporary gender studies and shifting cultural translation paradigm invite us to reconsider gender translation skills or strategies. While some current gender translation studies from a radical feminist perspective(Kweon, 2012) have focused on the issues of women’s liberation against male-centered viewpoints, these studies offered little to nothing regarding the ways in which dimension of cohabitation can be found in gender translation texts. This study provides the groundwork for such an analysis.
To do this, this study carefully explores shifting cultural translation paradigm, which affected the entire translation studies including gender translation issues. Then, by using Butler’s gender identity and her performance theory this study redefines gender translation strategies as a locus of cross-cultural writing. In line with the Butlerian perspective, this study examines two Korean translation texts of Walker’s The Color Purple. This comparative analysis shows that there is no relationship between gender identity of translators and gender translation. Taking into consideration the shifting cultural translation paradigm and the current gender studies, this study suggests three major translation strategies: (1) Do not consider translator’s gender identity first in gender translation; (2) Consider the dimensions of performance in gender translation texts; (3) Consider the purpose of cohabitation issues as a locus of cross-cultural writings in gender translation.
