Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the effects of Alismatis Rhizoma(AR) pharmacopuncture at BL23 and its mechanism of action on acute renal failure induced by cisplatin.

methods : The rats were devided into Nor group(no injection of cisplatin and no treatment), Con group(no treatment after injection of cisplatin), Acu group(treated of Acupuncture in the position corresponding acupoint of BL23 after injection of cisplatin), AR-PA1 group(treated with 0.3571mg/kg/20μl Concentration of Alismatis Rhizoma pharmacopuncture in the position corresponding acupoint of BL23 after injection of cisplatin), And AR-PA2 group(treated with 1.7855mg/kg/20μl Concentration of Alismatis Rhizoma pharmacopuncture in the position corresponding acupoint of BL23 after injection of cisplatin). Body weight, kidney weight, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha(TNF-α), Interleukin-6(IL-6), Cu-Zn Superoxide dismutase(Cu-Zn SOD), Glutathione Peroxidase(GPx), serum BUN, and serum creatinine of each group were measured once a day, for 8 days.

Results : 1. Body weight was significantly increased in some of the AR-PA1 and AR-PA2 groups compared to Con group.
2. Kidney weight was not significantly changed in all experimental groups compared to Con group.
3.TNF-α was significantly decreased in Acu group, AR-PA1 and AR-PA2 group compared to Con group.
4. IL-6 was not significantly changed in all experimental groups compared to Con group.
5. Cu-Zn SOD was significantly increased in the AR-PA2 group compared to Con group.
6.GPx was significantly increased in the AR-PA1 and AR-PA2 groups compared to Con group.
7. Serum BUN and serum creatinine were not significantly changed in all experimental groups compared to Con group.

Conclusions : In the acute renal failure induced by cisplatin, Pharmacopuncture of Alismatis Rhizoma cannot be expected to have effect of restoring glomerular function or suppressing renal edema. However, It is thought to have some protective effects against weight loss, an inhibitory effect on the inflammatory response associated with TNF-α, and protective effect against oxidative stress of kidney tissue.
