Objectives : The aim of this study was to identify the total, direct, and indirect influence of body dissatisfaction on Smartphone addiction; to determine relative magnitudes of specific mediating effects of personality characteristics among youths.
Methods : 115 young, healthy, normal participants in South Korea completed the Smartphone Addiction Scale, Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination-Self Report, and NEO Five-Factor Inventory. Multiple-mediation analyses using Indirect SPSS macros were performed.
Results : Body dissatisfaction had a significant total, direct and indirect effect on Smartphone addiction. Specific indirect effect of Body dissatisfaction on Smartphone addiction was mediated via Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, and Openness.
Conclusions : Our results will aid clinicians to recognize patients’ personality characteristics for managing both Smartphone addiction and body dissatisfaction. Consequently, they will be useful in the prevention and treatment.
