Purpose: This study compared two different optic disc tilt angles using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). And we investigated the relationships among ovality index, two different tilt angle measurements, and myopia-related parameters in myopic eyes.
Methods: A total 185 myopic eyes were included. Ovality index was obtained by fundus photography, and two different tilt angles were obtained using SD-OCT (A, based on an imaginary horizontal line; and B, based on optic disc margin). When the ovality index exceeds 1.3, the optic disc was defined as tilted disc. The correlation between ovality index and tilt angles A and B was analyzed, and the relationship between these and myopia-related parameters was also analyzed. We analyzed the diagnostic power of two different tilt angles with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) according to presence of tilt based on the ovality index.
Results: : The mean age of subjects was 23.0 ± 3.90 years, mean spherical equivalent refractive error was -4.94 ± 2.79 diopters, and mean axial length was 25.81 ± 1.38mm. Ovality index and tilt angles A and B had significant correlation with spherical equivalent, axial length, and area of β-zone peripapillary atrophy (all P ≤ 0.001). Tilt angles A (R2=0.340, P<0.001) and B (R2=0.350, P<0.001) showed a significant correlation with ovality index. There was no significant difference in AUROC for tilt angles A and B (0.819 and 0.807, respectively, P=0.702).
Conclusions: In evaluating optic disc tilt in myopic eyes, tilt angle A as well as tilt angle B may be useful method.
