This study tries to analyze how income contribution and relative working hours affect sleep time in working couples. It also notes that sleep will also be affected by the Gender ideology, which states that all daily actions are performed by the gender.
For empirical analysis, the 2014 Life Time Survey data conducted by the National Statistical Office was used. Those surveyed include working couples in their 20s and 50s, according to their husbands. And since the couple''s time use was expected to vary greatly from day to day, they separated the days of the week and conducted an analysis. The sleep time of the wife and husband is a dependent variable of the study, and the main independent variable is the wife''s income contribution and relative working hours.
The analysis shows that the Gender ideology basically influences the distribution of sleep time of the couple the most. For wives, regardless of the day of the week, it contradicts the previous hypothesis that more economic and time resources lead to more sleep time. As the wife''s income contribution increased, her sleep time showed a static relationship, but in the section (0.52) where the wife''s income contribution was reversed, the wife''s sleep time decreased significantly again. Also, when the husband worked relatively more hours than the wife, the wife''s sleep time decreased rather than increased, even though she could afford the wife''s available.
On the other hand, husbands showed a significant decrease in sleep time only if time resources were insufficient by paid working hours, regardless of the day of the week. Even her husband''s weekend sleeping hours showed a growing relationship as his wife''s income contribution increased. This means that the influence of the gender ideology is still greater than the hypothesis resulting from the theory of resource exchange and time constraint, and that the influence of each theory varies depending on gender. Even on weekends, husbands spend more time sleeping than wives, regardless of their influence on resource exchange theory and time constraint theory.
Previous studies focused on paid and domestic work hours, discussing the inequality of time distribution between couples. However, this study has the significance of expanding discussion through sleep time by suggesting inequality in the distribution of time between couples and the pressure of women''s time. Sleep time is a personal maintenance activity that is also directly linked to the reproduction of the individual''s health and labor force, and thus the time distribution inequality that occurs during sleep time has room to expand further to health inequality and inequality in the labor market. However, the data used in this study were for the total amount of time, only measuring the amount of sleep, but not discussing the quality of sleep and the nature of sleep. Therefore, it is expected that more specific and practical follow-up studies can be carried out if data can be used that distinguish between the amount and quality of sleep and the nature of sleep, or if questions are supplemented with existing data.
