본 연구는 해석수준이론에 근거하여 스토리텔링의 소구유형과 심리적 거리감이 피험자의 공감, 메시지태도 그리고 구매의도에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 이러한 설득효과가 관여도상황에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 2(심리적 거리감: 가까운vs먼)X2(스토리텔링 소구유형: 이성소구vs감성소구)X2(관여도상황: 고관여vs저관여) 피험자 집단간 실험설계를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 심리적 거리감에 관계없이 이성소구보다 감성소구의 공감이 더 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 공감에 대한 이성소구와 감성소구의 차이는 심리적 거리감이 가까운 경우보다 먼 경우에 더 크게 나타난 반면, 메시지태도에 대한 이성소구와 감성소구의 차이는 심리적 거리감이 먼 경우보다 가까운 경우에 더 크게 나타났다. 즉, 메시지태도를 높이기 위해서는 심리적 거리감에 따라 소구유형을 달리 사용하는 것이 효과적인 것으로 드러났다. 셋째, 저관여 상황에서 감성소구의 구매의도가 더 높게 나타난 반면, 고관여 상황에서 이성소구의 구매의도가 더 높게 나타나 정교화가능성모델과 일치한 결과가 나타났다. 또 고관여 상황보다 저관여 상황에서 구매의도가 더 높게 나타났다. 즉, 구매의도를 높이기 위해서는 관여도 상황에 맞는 소구유형을 사용하는 것이 효과적인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, 이론적이고 실무적인 시사점에 대한 논의가 이루어졌다.
