Bubbles have many industrial applications. It is important to understand bubble formation process. It is affected by various factors such as bubble generator geometry, physical and chemical properties of liquids, gas or liquid flow rate. There are few studies on the effect of surfactant concentration of liquid on the bubble generation when micro orifices are used.
Thus, in this study, the effect of surfactant concentration on bubbles formation, coalescence, and detachment at micro-orifices using various flow rates is investigated. In the experiment, micro orifices of 50, 100, and 200 μm were used, and the flow rates were adjusted from 0.9 to 50 ccm. Images of bubbles generated from the orifice were taken with a high-speed camera, and image processing was performed using Image J software to measure the size, rising velocity and number of coalescence at de-ionized water and 5, 20 ppm Triton X-100 solution.
As surfactant concentration is increased at all gas flow rates the size of bubbles becomes smaller. And in the range of flow rate larger than critical gas flow rate, the higher surfactant concentration, the smaller ratio of bubble volume to the Frtiz volume. As the orifice becomes smaller, surface tension force decreases and gas momentum force increases. Consequently, the effect of surfactant concentration becomes weaker. In addition, detachment and waiting time of bubble become shorter as the concentration of surfactant increases because bubble coalescence occurs less frequently as surfactant concentration becomes higher.
