As increasing of energy demand incite the depletion of fuel, so the development of alternative fuels is necessary. Pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) generated as a by-product through naphtha cracking center process is a valuable fuel because it has aromatic carbon number (C8-C15) similar to ideal jet fuel. However, PFO is being discarded due to difficulties in reprocessing. This work aims to convert PFO into transportation fuel by hydrogenation reaction. There have been previous hydrogenation reaction studies handle with only model reactants, because hydrogenation reaction of PFO containing various PAHs is a very complex reaction. So it was difficult to find the PFO hydrogenation reaction results of previous studies. Ethylbenzene and 1-methylnaphthalene were hydrogenated as model reactants, and the study results were applied to the PFO hydrogenation reaction. Ru/γ-Al2O3, Pt/γ-Al2O3, Pt/MCM-41, Ni2P/γ-Al2O3 were molded into pellets and beads in various sizes to evaluate the performance of the catalyst in a trickle-bed reactor. The prepared catalysts were analyzed for catalyst characterization through analysis of TPD, TPR, BET, Co-pulse chemisorption, and GC-MS. In addition, the optimal conditions for the hydrogenation reaction of PAHs were confirmed, and the performance of the catalyst were also confirmed through the long-term reaction.
