서구건축이 동아시아로 전이되는 과정에 관한 연구는 동아시아 근대건축사에서 뿐만 아니라 한국근대건축사에서도 중요한 의미를 갖는다. "전이언어"에는 과거 건축으로부터 근대건축에 이르는 각종 교훈들이 혼재되어 있는 것이다. 아시아 여러나라가 근대건축을 유럽,미국을 수원지로 해서 "수용했다"는 입장이고, 그러한 점에서는 한국,중국,일본도 같은 맥락이기 때문에 이 전이지역에 대한 연구는 여러나라 근대건축 정립에도 중요한 과제가 된다. 연구는 서양근대건축과 오리엔탈리즘에 대한 고찰과 동양으로의 전이로 대분했고, 그 전이경로를 분석했으며 식민세력권으로서의 마카오, 중국, 대만, 일본의 예를 각각 살펴봤다. 동과 서는 서로 교호하는 과정에 단절없는 영향을 주고 받았다고 할 수 있다.
