The purpose of this study was to analyze the reason why the architecture of Le Corbusier had influenced much the japanese architecture. But, this study didn't intend to consider whether or not japanese architects had understood correctly Le Corbusier's architecture. This study aimed at defining clearly the particularity of the japanese architectural world in the acceptance of western modern architecture through the analysis of the method by which japanese architects had appreciated Le Corbusier. At that time, Japan needed the monumental architecture for manifesting the power of the nation. At the same time, they have got to re-evaluate the superiority of japanese traditional architecture for the imperialistic aspiration in Asia. Japanese architects thought that Le Corbusier's architecture could express all of two necessities mentioned above in the point of view both of the representation of Modernism and of the similarity with japanese traditional architecture.
