The objective of this research is to examine the family dynamics and mythical characteristics found in Gwenwegitdangbonpuri, shamanistic ritual in Jeju-do Island. First of all, the family dynamics goes on between a married couple, father and son, and father-in-law and son-in-law.
Disagreement between the couple is basically confrontation between the production and infertility. Separation of the couple leads up to a friction between father and son. The father-son adn father-in-law and son-in-law conflicts are basically about control of territory. On the surface, the issue appears to be infidelity of children and the compulsive eating disorder of the son-in-law. What lies underneath the confontation between the family members is the desire of father and father-in-law to remove the potential capability of Gwenwegitdangsin. The family squabbling came to an undesirable conclusion, as those with power wins it, regardless of the significance of family or ethics. Myth is interpreted as a tool for shamanistic ritual, by which things will be put in order.
There are three mythical characteristecs. First, women emerged as leaders who are capable of solving the realistic problems, going beyond their symbolic status as a ruler of the earth's energy with the responsibility for production. Second, there is a weak connection between family and relatives. This is because that Gwenwegitdangbonpuri was created, before the social ethical codes were established and therefore Gwenwegitdangbonpuri reflected the mythical perception of the basic instinct of individuals. Third, the characters inherit the matrilineal heroic traits from the family and rise onto a deity status. The mother and child are the heroes of a group. In particular, the child Gwenwegitdangsin resolved the crisis in his mother's nation and became a hero, after being deserted by his father.
