The purpose of this study is to analyze design alternatives for apartment remodeling, and to find out the applicability of the alternatives to real projects, and to find out residents' preferences and needs on them. This study suggests a direction of remodeling design and hopes to vitalize remodeling projects in Korea.
This study categorizes types of remodeling design alternatives after analyzing 28 cases of foreign and domestic remodeling projects. The design alternatives are reviewed to check legal accordance of remodeling project. The survey employed questionnaires and interviews, and was performed at five deteriorated apartments at Gangnamgu, Seoul. The selection of apartments are based upon floor area ratio, period of living and so on.
First, the study finds out that the residents prefer additional rooms, extension of existing balconies, and extending rooms to balconies. Second, they want to convert corridor type apartment to staircase type (core type) for efficient use of interior space. Third, the residents at top floors wish not to have public roof gardens and those at ground floor want to install private gardens in front of their units.
