The purpose of this study is to consider openness as a solution for the contemporary urban housing and is to search for planning factors of the urban collective housing type. The application of openness to contemporary urban housing is examined in this paper by the inquiring of existing studies and by analyzing case studies. Spaces for the urban structure are evaluated to find openness in urban housing. From this study, the concept of openness can be improved by considering an importance of the urban connection and void space in the urban structure.
