The purpose of this thesis is to examine the meaning in a series of self-conscious short stories of Lee, Tae-Joon in late 1930s. The early writings of Lee, Tae-Joon begin with "Kamakwee"(The Crow) in late 1930s, are connected with "Jangma"(The Rainy Season), "Paikanglang(浿江冷), and The "Toki-iyagy"(The Story of a Rabbit). And in early 1940s or "Sanyang"(The Hunting), "Sukyang"(The Evening Sun), and "Mooyeun"(無緣) are published. These works are remarkable in consisting a turning-point of the whole literary life of the writers.
"Kamakwee" is the beginning of a series of writing that the writer shows in late 1930s. In this work, the writer finds the new capability of his life, against the Japanese Imperialism, to be born again as an artist. This consciousness as an artist shows by pursuing the aestheticism that intends to the harmony of life and art. "Jangma" symbolically describes the rise of fascism, threatens the existence of individual, and the lethargy of the writer who unwillingly gazes on that fact. This work is also remarkable that it shows the desire for escape from the oppressive power of a modern colony.
In "Paikanglang" and "Toki-iyagy", the writer describes the hero who lost his capability for life which he desires against the colonial Chosun in time of war. These heroes are isolated into the world of disrupt self-consciousness for they cannot be an intellectual or be an artist. In "Sanyang", the writer begins to show the process of the return of the self, and it is related with the motif of escape from Kyungsung, the capital of colonial empire.
And the journey motif is repeated also in "Sukyang", so the writer's desire of escape is clearly appeared. The exterior real world is a space of secular meaning and a place to e~ape for the world of absolute value which is hidden inside the self. In this point, "Sukyang" shows the disillusioned romanticism In "Mooyeun", however, in a moment, this emotion of disillusion changes into the emotion of renunciation. The stage of renunciation in "Mooyeun" also means the return to the inner life, but it is important for the fact that there is no confrontation in the stage of renunciation. In this point, the writing of writer couldn't be continued.
The motive of the works of Lee, Tae-Joon begins from late 1930s, is consisted by the oppression from the outside, so his works take the way of searching for self by the rise of fascism. He finds his own way in coming back to the world of an artist, to stand against the shadow of the dark age which suppresses himself. The problematics of Lee, Tae-Joon during the late 1930s is from the fact that he solve these themes in his own ways. He expresses the desire of resistance and escape by the self-reflected writings. And it is proposed by the process of the escape to Pyongyang and Kyungju, from Kyungsung where the power of colonial empire exists.
