Intake port injection type and in-cylinder injection type hydrogen fuel supply systems were designed, assembled and adapted to the single cylinder research engine to understand the performance and emission characteristics of hydrogen fueled engine according to the location of mixture formation and the hydrogen injection method.
At the low load condition, external mixing method with the intake port injection was superior in thermal efficiency and engine operation stability. At the high load condition, internal mixing method with the in-cylinder injection was superior to the external mixing in the engine operation stability. At the engine test with the condition of throttle valve control, the engine was operated more stably and more efficiently when the fuel-air equivalence ratio was maintained above some level in spite of pumping loss, due to the stable combustion. This trend was showed at both cases, intake port injection and in-cylinder injection.
The hydrogen fueled engine can be operated more stably with the in-cylinder injection at higher load and more efficiently with the intake port injection at lower load. Throttle control at low load condition makes the hydrogen engine more efficient. The efficiency of in-cylinder injection type hydrogen engine can be enhanced with the modification of intake air motion.
