To characterize the internal flow of the catalytic converter, measurements were taken at the mid and exit planes of a ceramic honeycomb catalytic converter at flow rates of 80 scfm (37.8 l/s) and 200 scfm (94.4 l/s). The velocity profiles were initially measured with the air flow en ering the converter from an air hose. Next, 2 foot long intake and exhaust pipes were installed on the converter for measurements taken along only the minor axis. The intake pipe was added to stimulate a fully developed flow into the converter. Imposing this condition onto the system was necessary in order to compare measured profiles with Auto-company computer simulated velocity profiles. Auto-company simulated velocity profiles were computed under the assumption that the flow entered the converter one-dimensionally and fully developed.
Measurements along the major axis showed uneven velocity profiles. The half. of the honeycomb cut along the center line of the major axis, opposite the flow's entrance, had large U-velocities than were present closer to the intake region. This resulted in half of the converter being burdened by a higher flow rate.
The Auto-company computer model accurately represented the U-velocity pattern at mid and exit planes and closely represented the V-velocity pattern at only exit plane. The simulated velocities did not match the measured V-velocity pattern at mid plane. For almost all velocity values, the computer model proposed velocities slightly larger in magnitude than those measured.
