Reducing the intake of fresh water is prerequisite to the water system 'closure of paper mills. Papermaking system closure causes an inevitable increase of fine materials in papermaking systems. It also causes substantial increase of organic and inorganic substances in the process water. Accumulation of these substances in the papermaking process water can cause significant deterioration of product quality and process efficiency. Thus it is of great importance for paper mills to understand the influence of the level of papermaking system closure on product quality and process efficiency before implementing any endeavor of closing their process water circuit.
To examine the influence of papermaking system closure on paper properties, highly contaminated white waters were prepared using reverse osmosis technology and used for forming handsheets with linerboard, newsprint and fine paper stocks. Results showed that the quality of process water negatively affected the strength properties of these paper grades. An experimental approach consisted of the preparation of highly contaminated process water using reverse osmosis and handsheet forming with head box stocks dispersed in the concentrated white water was found to be highly appropriate in predicting the relationship between the process water quality and product quality.
The influence of colloidal and dissolved materials on linerboard properties was examined. Results showed that colloidal substances playa critical role in developing sheet strength.
