Korea has many urban structures and buildings that can provide identity to its citizens as landmarks. Many of the structures and buildings have potential to become international landmarks through systematic management and conservation. Korea has not effectively utilized
landmarks in urban planning and design, because there has been no systematic program and method for management or conservation of
landmarks.
This paper focuses on research and applicability to Korea of the system of landmarks in the United States. The study reviews literature
such as published research reports, related regulations and policies, and public relation brochures. We then conducted online research
including a review of related webpage and e-mail interviews.
The results of this research can be summarized as follows:
1) The meanings of landmarks should be considered as important as their physical forms;
2) Modern structures and buildings, as well as historical ones should be considered and conserved as landmarks;
3) Diverse management methods should be applied to preservation and conservation according to types of landmarks;
4) Privately-owned, historically valuable properties should be considered and possibly designated as landmarks. The private
owners should be given diverse incentives for proper management;
5) If a property loses its cultural value or meaning, withdrawal from the list of Historic Cultural Assets should be considered.
Application of the results of this study will lead to systematic management of Korea’s landmarks through reasonable rules and regulations.
Furthermore, application of this research will help improve and reinforce the identity of Korean cities.
