It was in 17th century that Lamanism flowed into Mongolia, and its unique costume and pattern have had great influence on Mongolian culture ever since. One of the most representative rituals in Lamanism is Tsam dance, a masquerade, including Garuda, Mahakala, Yama, etc., are from Indian Myth, and these are grouped into several types, that is, Citipati, divine generals, black hat, and others. Citipati wears a skull mask, a 胡服-style tight-sleeved jacket and dose-fitting trousers. A divine general wears a Satanic mask, a lamas' skirt, a loose coat with sleeves of many-colored stripes, dok-yik, a Mahakala apron, ornaments made of bene with Buddhistic patterns on them, and 'elephant shoes'. While his mask is of Indian mode, the clothes are more complicated in style, adopting Chinese items such as Ch'ing-fashioned coat and dok-yik. Although the costumes may vary according to the circumstances of each temple. pigtail ribbens are invariably worn. Blackhat wears not a mask, but a black hat symbclizing 'the wond', except for which his costume is similar to the divine general's. White Old Man wears a robe and carries a cane, whereas more ferocious Dark Old Man's appearance is much the same as divine generals'. Mongolian Tsam dance succeeds that of libet. Characters such as Dark Old Man, the Mongolian shaman who stands against Larnanism, however, reveal Mongolian atmosphere and thought. There have been active interchanges of clothes between Mongol and Korea, but these were limited to ordinary dresses. Mongolian Buddhism chose Larnanistic costume and Korean Buddhism leaned quite toward Mhayanam which is why there is found little resemblance between the clerical garbs of the two nations. However, similarities abound between, between masks, multi-colored stripes, pigtail ribbons, 胡服-style jackets and trousers of Mongolian Tsam dance costume and those of Korean masque dance costume. It is quite natural that exchange of clothes between two countries should be accompanied by various ways of accepting them as the environments and atmospheres of each demand.
