With the emergence of the Western university, practical theology as a distinct branch of theology emerged during the early modern period. Since its appearance, however, practical theology has been questioned as to its nature and purpose. Practical theology has been considered as focusing on the sorts of issues that ministers confront in their work. This problem of the present situation, as Edward Farley argues, is closely related to the study of theology (Encyclopedia movement) which originated in the modern university of Germany. Abandoning Friedrich Schleiermacher's effort to unite various disciplines into a single discipline, the Encyclopedia movement also dropped Schleiermacher's attempt to identify subject matter for practical theology.
This leads us to ask what Schleiermacher attempted to do for the study of theology. This paper attempts to deal with Schleiermacher's work and thought, in order to trace the present problems of practical theology and to look at the emergence and development of practical theology. Schleiermacher was the first protestant scholar who counted practical theology as a theological discipline among the other fields in the university in his encyclopedia of theological studies. Fragmented as it was, his insight has deeply influenced the studies of theological education in general and practical theology in particular in Germany and in America Secondly, this paper describes and evaluates one subsequent work on practical theology which reflects Schleiermacher's influence, Edward Farley's work. In dealing with Schleiermacher's understanding of practical theology, Farley gives us a foundation for formulating practical theology. In his book Theologia, Farley demonstrates practical theology as a hibitus and as a discipline. By explaining Schleiermacher's three disciplines of theology and rejecting the theory-praxis encylopedia, Farley suggests the academic identity of practical theology among other theological disciplines.
As a normative discipline, practical theology is theoria, according to Schleiermacher, but theoria directly related to the praxis of the church's leadership. Practical theology as theologia has both a habitus and a discipline, and both theoria and praxis. In critical correlation with Farley's understanding of practical theology, Schleiermacher's outline of practical theology among theological studies seems to offer important implications for practical theology. This insight could potentially protect practical theology from any uncritical turn to practice which could fail to recognize its relation to the theoretical and the whole.
