Practical theology first appeared in conjunction with the emergence of moral theology or Christian ethics. Practical Theology can be defined as theological reflection and construction arising out of and providing guidance to the Christian community in the praxis of its task. However, until very recently, practical theology was widely understood as applied theology. Practical theology has been considered as focusing on the sorts of issues that ministers confront in their work. It has become an applied or technical discipline without subject matter and method.
In the area of practical theology, it can be said that two main concerns have emerged in terms of the methodology of practical theology: (1) practical theology as hermeneutical and (2) a renewed emphasis on praxis. Starting with the praxis of the present situation, I suggested a methodology which moves beyond, first, the clerical paradigm which focuses only on the praxis of clergy and, second, the ecclesial paradigm which confines the praxis to the Christian vocation in the world, in other words, praxis of congregations. This methodology thus attempts to include the praxis of God which embraces the nonecclesial context as well as the ecclesial context. I suggested a methodology which bridges theory and practice, which connects church with society, which correlates theology with its non-theological partners, which places us between hope and critical realism, which provides a situation for open communication based on relationality, equality, and openness, and which can guide us to the future. This is a methodology which can provide an adequate framework for examining our present situation in the modern context as well as for exploring a possibility for the achievement of an alternative Christian education.
