There are two different kinds of books dealing with the 8aekche Dynasty between the books written. in Namjo and those in Bukjo in the Chinese orthodox historiography. The history books of the Namjo include Songseo. Namjeseo, Yangseo. Namsa. etc and those of the Bukjo are Uiseo, Juseo. Suseo. Bukseo, etc. China was divided into Namjo and 8ukjo during the Baekche Dynasty and the situation explains the reason why there are two different versions about the 8aekche Dynasty.
The history books of the Namjo explain the birth of Baekche. its relationship with China, the Yoseoyoungyu(Baekche's occupation of Yoseo in China), royal genealogy and so on. All those books claim that Baekche was originated from Mahan and don't discuss the culture of Baekche save the Yangseo. in which the Damro system of Baekche is described.
History books of the Bukjo deal with more various facts such as origin of Baekche, its relationship with China. royal genealogy. customs. religion. geography, social system. language. etc.
There are often completely different explanations between books of the Namjo and the ones of the Bukjo about the same fact. For example. the books of the Namjo say that the origin of Baekche is Mahan. while those of the Bukjo say that it is Buyeo. Another example of the differences between two versions is that the books of the Bukjo do not mention Yoseoyoungyu.
These differences might be due to the different interests and recognition of Baekche. The history books. of the BUkj? contain more contemporary, various, and original records than those of the Namjo. This might be the reason why Samguksagi was written on the basis of the history books of the Bukjo.
And Gudangseo, Shindangseo, Jachitonggam, etc deal with the international situation, decline of the nation, and the restoration movement at the end of Baekche period in detail. It seems that Samguksagi was written based on the records of these history books. So the value of Chinese history books can not. be underestimated when we study the history of Baekche.
