The history text books of middle and high schools in the People's Republic of China are treating the facts related to Koguryo and since 1950s, which is the initial stage of People's Republic of China's establishment. Concerning Koguryo, 「Chinese History」mainly treats contents related to invasion of Koguryo by Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty. These history text books of middle and high schools in People's Republic of China emphasized on the fact that many people suffered due to wars by making an example of Sui Dynasty evading Koguryeo as a symbol of Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty's tyranny, and in the end, that the dynasty collapsed from peasant rebellion after 1950s. The cause of such description was because the text books of People's Republic of China was written based on 「The History Program」, the index for writing history text books, and this description for Koguryo was used until recently. However, changes in description of Koguryo appeared recently in the history text books of People's Republic of China since a historical view of class struggle based on North Korean-Chinese friendship and Marxism-Leninism declined. The text books analyze the ancient history of Korea stressing on today's People's Republic of China. The war between Koguryo and Sui Dynasty were not treated in a number of new history text books at middle schools as a failed war.
The history text books in 1950s does not mention anything about the history of Palhae. The text book published by the People's Education Press in 1963 mentioned Palhae as "Sokmal malgal(粟末靺鞨)". Text books from this period emphasize that "Sokmal malgal(粟末靺鞨)" was found with the 말갈족 as the main shaft, and made close exchanges with the Tang Dynasty. Since then "Sokmal malgal(粟末靺鞨)" was distinguished from the surrounding countries and considered a people of the frontier area. The history text books published after the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution stresses on the relationship between the Palhae and inner China on a higher level, and that Palhae was a subordinate country authorized by the Tang dynasty. It can be thought that Palhae was described as a local government of 'minor ethnicity' authorized by the Tang dynasty as a country found by the " Malgal(靺鞨)" to protect today's integrated multiracial country system.
The Ministry of Education in the People's Republic of China did not designate a certain publishing firm to publish the text books from 2001, and opened the text book market by adopting the economic principles. The text books of the People's Republic of China before designated an integrated single text books based on 「The History Program」, but in 2001 the 「The History Curriculum Standards」 was enacted and a multiple text book system began by a manifesto. The history text books based on 「The History Curriculum Standards」 came to not mention or simply describe of the war between Koguryo and Sui Dynasty by allocating an extremely small quantity compared to before.
Such trend of description is basically reflected not only in text books written according to 「The History Program」, but also in the experimental history of People's Republic of China at middle schools based on 「The History Curriculum Standards」 and world history text books. The experimental history text book declined in pages and content related to Korea compared to the text books published based on 「The History Program」 in the past.
People's Education Press is now describing Korea's history through KoguryoㆍBaekjaeㆍShilla by adding a category of Ancient Joseon (Ancient Korea) in 「International History」 text books at middle schools starting with 2006 fall semester by accepting Korea's request. However, there is no difference in text books published by other firms other than the People's Education Press, which cannot be a desirable phenomenon considering recent relationship between Korea and China.
