This article discusses the political ability of Injo through the dispute on the posthumous name Wonjong who is lnjo's biological father. Injo who dethroned Kuanghaekun(光海君) by military coup and ascended the throne was regarded as direct successor of Sunjo(宣祖) who is his grandfather. So as soon as Injo ascended the throne, there was the argument about the relationship of Injo and his father Jeongwonkun(定遠君). This was the most political dispute of the first half of reign of Injo, which was bestowed Jeongwonkun the posthumous name Wonjong in
The process of the dispure on the posthumous name was divided into two stage. The first stage was begun by the argument about the name
of private shrine, and ended by the argumenr about the funeral rites of
Keunkung(啓運宮) who is Injo's biological mother. In this time, Injo named his title as the son of Jeongwonkun through the transformed rites (變禮). This was the cause of the dispute about posthumous name Wonjong. In the funeral rites of Keunkung, Injo couldn't hold two-year mourning like his hope, but he could perform the funeral rites of Keunkung regarding as the Rites of Royal funeral(國喪), and firmly maintained to hold two-year mourning in his mind. He really tteated his mother Keunkung as a queen in the two-year mourning funeral rites. In addition to the funeral rites of Keunkung, Injo ordered the government to raise the name of the tomb of Jeongwonkun, and he wanted to complete the posthumous name Wonjong. But this attempt was stopped by invasion of the early Ching(丁卯胡亂. 1627). The second stage was the period which the posthumous name was completed in 1632.
In this stage Injo contraled the bitter dispute on the posthumous name which divided all ministers into two side, and consolidated the power of king.
