In this article I hope to show that Augustus was a shrewd politician who used the religion to his political aims. He restored many temples and the rituals that had perished in the civil wars. He rebuilt eighty-two temples in the city, and built the new temples. He revived old priesthoods, such as augury of Safety, the office of Flamen Dialis. Although people wanted him to become the pontifex maximus in succession to a colleague Lepidus still living, he declined that proposal, for it was against the mos maiorum. On the death of Lepidus, in 13 B.C., he became the pontifex maximus by the election of the people. He wanted him to be seen a traditionalist, a conservative by the Romans.
But he was a renovator in the sphere of religion. He concentrated priesthoods to himself. Since he became a pontifex in 48 B.C., augur in 41-40 B.C., XV vir sacris faciundis in c. 37 B.C., and VII vir epulonum by 16 B.C. He built and rebuilt the temples on the Capitolium, but the
Platium was more impotant than the Capitolium. In Palatium, there was
his palace, and beside that, the temple of Cybele. And a temple of Apollo was constructed on the Palatium in 28 B.C. So gradually the Palatium became the center of New Stare. In this way, he seized religious authority as well as political power, and became the father of the country, in 2 B.C. Princep Augustus became Imperator Caesar. Finally, the Augustan Period was a period of restoration and renovation in the state religion.
