This paper synthesizes the modeling features of an entity-based integrated model for structural design, by combining and reformulating each part of the modeling features described in the authors’ earlier papers. An entity-based integrated model uses entities to describe both the design information (product entities) and the design activities (process entities). Organizational, interaction, and sequence relationships exist among these entities. Organizational relationships provide a logical arrangement of product and process entities, interaction relationships characterize interdependencies among the design information described by the product entities, and sequence relationships describe sequences of the design activities described by the process entities. This paper describes concepts and related notation for the organizational, interaction, and sequence relationships, and illustrates them using a structural frame design example. The example shows that the entitybased model has the following beneficial features: design information and design activities are both represented using the same notation based on entities, attributes, and relationships; different types of frame design alternatives are represented uniformly and consistently; interactions among beams and columns are formulated as constraints and are represented as attributes of the related product entities; and a variety of acceptable sequences of design activities are represented as context-free grammars. The contributions of the entity-based integrated design model for developing computer-integrated design systems are critically reviewed.
