This paper studies late 1930s criticism which newly appreciated the value of inwardness and reproduced a new literariness. After marxism, which overwhelmed in early 1930, was on the ebb, critics who lost common ideology became isolated in the inner solitude. Therefore, they revaluated the inwardness and individual mantal state. They also recognized the real fuction of criticism Unlike former criticism, late 1930s criticism do not lead the creation, but is devoted to finding new literariness behind the creation.
Critics projected their inner solitude on contemporary writers and their charater. By such a projection, inwardness was highly valued in criticizing the novels. Lee won-cho(李源朝), who was most sensitive to the fuction of criticism and individual motality, attended idelogical apostate novel. In commenting the novel of Kim nam-chon(金南天), Lee hyo-suk(李孝石), he considered a derailed description of inner mental state as a representation of reasonable conversional process. In case of Choi Jae-seo(崔載瑞), who understood the inwardness by the help of psychological notion, proposed the possibility of a couple of realism One is inner realism, the other is outer realism By commenting two kinds of a novel <The wings(날개)>, <A scenety of a riverside(천변풍경)>, he found a perceiving mind which could be called inwardness. His realism encountered Lim-hwa's refutation, but Lim-hwa(林和) developed this new direction as literary mode studies. In lim-hwa's novel studies, a novel representing the inner mind stare(內省小說) and a novel reflecting social condition(世態小說) acted as stimulus to cognition of novel mode.
