It has been 40 years this year since the Research Foundation of Korean Church History(RFKCH) was founded. The history of Korean Catholic Churches cannot be thought of without RFKCH. It is time that we looked back upon the organization's past research activities. The past activities can be divided into 4 parts : i) the publication of academic journals, ii) material collection and arrangement, iii) the publication of research materials of church history, and iv) the popularization of church history.
The most outstanding research activity of RFKCH was the publication of academic journals. While 'Church and History' was for general Christians, 'Research Journal of Korean Church History' was an academic journal for specialized research. of addition, RFKCH was interested in collecting and arranging materials. RFKCH considered collection and arragement of materials a basic step to describe Korean church history.
Based on those materials, RFKCH published many books regarding church history. RFKCH publicized church history researchers' achievements and described the history of many parishes and parish churches. Most of all, RFKCH's remarkable achievement was the publication of 'Korean Catholic Encyclopedia'. It showed the present research level of Korean Catholic church history. Recently there was an attempt to publish a historical overview of Korean Catholic churches for systematic recognition of church history research. RFKCH strived for the popularization of church history. Exhibitions of historical materials about church history, lectures or classes on church history, or open University courses showed the attempts to educate the general public.
In spite of these efforts, RFKCH faces difficulty, i. e. the fact that the research on Korean Catholic church history is considered less important in describing Korean history. Not enough research has been done on church history yet. Despite the financial difficulty, RFKCH needs to promote interaction with general historians and increase the number of researchers participating in Korean Catholic church history research.
