Bukgando(North-Gando), written by An Su-gil, is an historical family novel that deals with Korean modern history from the 1870s to 1945 when Korea beame independent from Japan. It tells struggling immigration story to Gando.
The story is composed of five parts which carry through to the period of the liberty party(from 1959 to 1967) which automatically gave the story an experience of April.19th and May.16th. The ending of the 1950s in Korea was a confusing time due to the debris of Korean war and not many could afford to take a look back to the history, and accordingly, it was hard to find a full-length historical novel reflecting what we had been through. The 『Bukando』, though, tried to pay attention to the national issues and the author became it successful.
The researcher here studies Bukgando in terms of the implication of the Bukgando bears and its description of how the story unfolds. Also, the researcher examines how Lee Han-bok family copes with reality in an effort to figure out their national identity. The life history of the Lee Han-bok family through the 4th generation can be summed up resistance to outside(foreign countries) and struggling to protect national independence which is of the main idea of Bukgando. And the author successfully shows this main idea upon characters in the book by describing how they react to the reality and guard their identity confronting when and where they live.
A fiction “Bukgando” progresses its overall story by combining main characters' story with historical background. In other words, its story, which consists of main characters' resistance against reality, is based on what the author, An Su Kil, wants to tell about historical affairs. For example, the background situation changes in this novel, achceved by incident after incident created by the characters. Historical affairs in Gan-do play an important role in the fiction. This gives us a feeling that it is a documentary focusing on historical facts rather than a novel which focusies on a character's life story. In short word, its author seems to want to vividly describe his own experience and inform korean lives and history in the region through his book 『BUKGANDO』.
The author deals with the way a Korean lives from 1870 to 1945 in reality.
Two characters , Lee Han Book and Lee Jang Son, fight against pressure from foreigner individually, whereas another character, Chang-ho organizes a group fighting for the nation called “Sapodae”. To organize Sapodae to fight for the nation has a variety of indications; a concrete action plan to keep the nation's sovereignty and a united national will for independence.
When the As Jung-soo generation arrives in the novel, the way of resistance changes again.
This generation acknowledges education as the best way of saving the nation and educating Koreans to be united and build strong nationalism.
The book “Bukgando” depicts THE way of Lee Han-bok family's lives throughout four generations. They make enormous efforts to bring the nation's identity back in the book. The fiction reminds us our of Korean ancestors' efforts and suffering. Therefore, this book is very significant in Korean literature.
