From antiquity, history and literature actively intertwined and the reflection on history and the question of “what is history?” were usually made in close relations to literature. However, as modern history tried to establish itself as an independent discipline, it had to intentionally break away from literature - this is how modern history obtained its identity. Separation of history and literature in modern history took on two aspects: first, it refused imagination and second, it excluded narrativity. Yet, in these days, literature and history are brought together again with history embracing imagination and narration, and the boundary between history and literature is put to question. Such change is evident in ‘microstoria’ and interpretation of history by post-structuralism. Fictionality and narrativity in history which were once evicted and erased in modern history are making their return with greater power.
Today, there is a growing awareness of fictionality and narrativity in historical depiction and history is regarded as a written material of a historian, a narrator of history. This view shed light on the fundamental similarity between history and literature and such a view affected the way literature dealt with historical elements and documents. Contemporary historical fiction does not have to fully respect the objective facts of historical entities or accept the restraint posed by historical reality. In a freer manner, contemporary historical fiction can fictionalize and give contemporary interpretation to history. Examples of this historical fiction would be novels written by authors such as Kim Hun, Kim Yeong-ha, Seong Seok-je, and Kim Yeon-su. The authority of historical reality which was the basis of literary interpretation in historical fiction became weakened. As a result, fictional creativity, which intervene with historical records and reformulate or recreate the truth, and its meaning have gained great strength. In this respect, history is turning into fiction and fiction is turning into history. Unlike in the past when history and literature were categorized under the dichotomy of ‘reality / fiction,' ‘objectivity / subjectivity,' and ‘serious / not serious,' today, history and literature are crisscrossing, colliding and converging. Consequently, different types of writing are being produced.
