This paper illuminated the chinese poems of Hong, Han-ju, who is widely known as the author of “Gisuyompil(智水拈筆)”. Particular attention was paid to the fact that Hong, Han-ju's literature anthology, “Haeonggo(海翁藁)”, showed in detail the development of the history of chinese poems at the 19th century. Thus, this paper examined Hong, Han-ju's compositional tendencies, contiuing with an examination of his chinese poems in relation to his cultural inclinations. Through such a complete examination of the chinese poems of Hong, Han-ju, this paper discussed how the conciousness of authors and the charicter of the chinese poems changed with Hong, Han-ju in 19th century.
This paper examinated his chinese poems, old -style poems(古詩), poems of saunter and enjoyment, poems of travels, poems of local customs. No sense of responsibility or anxiety for society or reality can be found in Hong, Han-ju's chinese poems. He did not consider himself to have any responsibility toward society as a member of the ruling class. In short, Hong, Han-ju created the chinese poems that was faithful to his personal inclinations and cultural tastes. In Hong, Han-ju's chinese poems, the creative logic and creative practice of “enjoying litreature in and of itself” is dominant. This means that literature was not to be used as a method of the social purpose. Though the chinese poems of Hong, Han-ju came from the urban culturale that was the basis of his riches, it was important change that he affirmed literaure's self-sufficient and recreational character, and he showed the personality at the forefront of his literaure.
