Kim, So-Wol left 270 poems after him including ballads, prose poems, verses, poems in Japanese, poems in English and 16 translated Chinese poems. So-Wol’s consciousness on genre and the characteristics of his poetical consciousness in his translation of Chinese poems are as follows.
First, So-Wol’s translations of Chinese poems should be understood as they were the products of transformed Chinese literature which appeared in the later years of Yi-Dynasty. They had the characteristics of changed ballads of Chinese poems in which he pursued Korean typical forms and soul.
Second, So-Wol interpreted some unfamiliar Chinese poems in his own way and recreated them into poems which have Koreanized forms and emotions. His translations had unprecedented, broad aspects and they showed his belief that translation is another creation.
Third, another distinguishing feature of his translation of Chinese poems was his inclination to balladries. His favorite tetra-metre poems showed that he preferred security to jauntiness in his poetical consciousness.
Fourth, So-Wol pursued various sensual imageries in his translation of Chinese poems through which he overcame the unfamiliar exotic emotion and dryness and he evoked people’s sympathy widely with it.
