This paper begins with awareness of insufficient attention to conflict resolution in Christian education in Korea. In the Christian education, a conflict is learned to avoid or ignore in the name of Christian humility. However, conflict resolution on the basis of humility cannot be applied to the conflict between the old and the young in a local church. It is important to analyze and include cultural differences in the Christian education, to restore reconciliation effectively.
Cultural differences are analyzed in terms of individualism and collectivism. Independent self is contrasted to interdependent self.
Cultural change in the Korean society is analyzed. Collectivism gets weaker while individualism gets stronger. Familism, favoritism, and selfish self-help ideology have increased, whereas egalitarianism, pseudo-socialism, optimism, authoritarianism, dogmatism, elitism, and governmental paternalism have decreased significantly. There have been lots of management restructuring in business, so that egalitarianism, optimism, pseudo-socialism, and elitism are clearly vanishing.
Cultural differences on conflict are analyzed. In the Korean Protestantism, collectivism is still dominant. However, individualism advances rapidly and broadly in the Korean society. Therefore, there is a high level of possibility for conflicts derived from the cultural differences. A conflict is often likely to be provoked and exacerbated on the basis of the differences between equality and equity, between seniority and performance, between effort and ability, and between interpersonal obligations and fairness.
Cultural differences on conflict resolution are analyzed. In the Korean Protestantism, there exist three methods of conflict resolution together. Individualists prefer the adversarial procedure. Some collectivists prefer the Korean dynamically collectivistic method. And the other collectivists prefer the harmony model without a confrontation. Coexistence of the three different methods is likely to prohibit from resolving a conflict but exacerbate the conflict.
Finally, to promote conflict resolution in the Korean Protestantism, a couple of Christian educational guidelines are presented on the basis of the cultural analysis. First, it is important to include cultural awareness, analysis, and tolerance in the curriculum of the Christian education. Second, it is important to learn the other's culture. The goal in Christian education lies in learning both individualism and collectivism.
