Mushinran(戊申亂) is the historic event that Junso(峻少) and Namin(南人), considering them in danger after the King Yongjo(英祖)'s coronation, brought about to get rid of Yongjo and Noron(老論) and have Milpoonggun(密豊君) Tan(坦), Soheongseja(昭顯世子)'s great-grandson, as the king of Choson in 1728(Yongjo 4). Yi In-jwa(李麟佐) in Chungchon-do, Jong Hee-ryang(鄭希亮) in Kyongsang-do, Park Pil-heon(朴弼顯) in Cheolla-do and Kwon Seo-bong(權瑞鳳) in Kyonggi-do raised up an army in their local communities.
There are two approach methods to have been used for the study of Mushinran. One was that scholars tried to find out the reason, progress and meaning of the event after they define it as a political change involved in the party rivalry. The other was that they make a study of the Mushinran under the basis that it meant social movements which various classes of people could join as their awareness was growing thanks to the change of social environment. The former was mainly used by the first scholars from 1950s to 1970s and the latter was done by the scholars influenced by the people's democratic view of history from 1980s to 1990s. Due to these scholars' effort, the cause and effect of the Mushinran and its process are lifted the veil to some degree. However, it is true that the essence of Mushinran was not known for sure yet. That's because those ways have some problems in using the data and their view of the Mushinran. The followings are the solutions to the problems.
First, it is necessary that we have to thoroughly reconsider and analyze the basic data of the study related to the party rivalry. In general, there can be some differences in the historic records about even the same political events according to those who describe them. We have a good reason to do the jobs as stated above. In spite of the present situation, it is true that there are few explanations or analyses about the data in Mushinran paying attention to the aptitudes of the parties. In addition, it is a fact that the data from the Wanso party;the party in power at that time, or Noron;the main current in the society, were being used for the study. We should also take a close look at the data from other parties not to lose our balance.
Second, Mushinran was an meaningful incident to influence the society in King Yongjo's reign, and there were some demonstrations after 1728 when Mushinran broke out. It also became involved in the Tanpyonchak (蕩平策, Yonjo's policy to make the parties united) and the struggle for power at that time.
As the importance for the need to study history with people's democratic view of history is emphasized, historians are having interests in popular movements and the rising of ordinary peoples' social status. However, it is hard to find the theses on the groups of politicians who led the political situation. According to the results of investigation about Mushinran, it became known that Sajog(士族) ; scholars in Choson era, were playing more important roles than ordinary people. As a result, it seems that if we analyze the data more objectively we will be able to examine Sajog's and ordinary people's roles with the proper balance in Mushinran and find out its characteristics.
Third, Hyangchon;every local community, has its own special features in the growth and constitution of the leaders and historic backgrounds. Therefore, it is natural that there are some differences in the same historic events at every community. However, the former historians didn't consider it was the local communities' matter or event. They focused the Mushinran only on the national event. But there must have been various reasons and goals for Sajog to take part in Mushinran. If we don't take these factors into account, there may not be enough historic grounds for the study of Mushinran. Therefore, we should try to find out and analyze cases involved in Mushinran which Sajog took part in.
