Tourism culture is changing in many ways. Entertainment-centered tourism is now giving its way to theme, experiential and green tourism featuring natural and culturallegacy. It is also expected that the five-day workweek will help encourage more people to hit the road for their extra holidays. Leaving behind entertainment tourism, which has been criticizedfor being too decadent, a more productive and advanced tourism culture is currently emerging, which features the inherited nature and culture.
Advanced tourism culture takes high-qualify tourismitems. However, little effort has been done to train professional tourism workers who can play a leading role in those items. In 1999, the state-run exam to select tourismstaff was scrapped. Only once did the Ministry of Culture and Tourism train cultural legacy commentators before Visit Korea 2001 and the World Cup finals held in Korea and Japan in 2002.
When cultural legacy commentators serve as a tourism guide in local sites, we need "through guiders" to take care of every other need of tourists. "Through guiders" are those who accompany tourists everywhere they go, providing well-informed tourism tips for the duration of tour. We also need mangers who accompany tourists and professional culture tourism commentators who provide information regarding natural and cultural legacy.
Culture tourism commentators include tour guiders, tour managers, tour consultants, tour marketers, tour curators. Laws and systems should be in place for selecting qualified tourism workers. Also, government's active role will enhance efficiency in nurturing professional tourism workers. To raise the overall quality of workforce, the government needs to limit qualifications for the test only to those who havecompleted related curriculum in college. If it is to further the development of the culture industry, the government should not waste no time in training professional culture tourism workforce who can be deployed in fields right away.
