PVD and CVD Process are very useful methods to make a nano structure on the surface of the parts, but the deposition rate is too slow. Recently, about 0.5㎛/min deposition technique is being commercialized and High speed-Large scale deposition technique (1~3㎛/min) is being developed. This advanced technology made it possible to apply preferentially to the automobile engine parts such as Piston ring, Tappet and Cap valve that need the high lubricant properties and increase its fuel efficiency. Additionally many researchers have been testing a number of different coatings on the Gear parts to decrease noise and extend pitting fatigue life.
In this paper, PVD process with WC/C Base coating material was applied to two types of pinion shaft in the Power Steering Gear box to save manufacturing cost and increase friction performance. One is the common pinion shaft that is manufactured by machining (Shaping) - heat treatment (High frequency) process. the other is the developing pinion shaft that is manufactured by gear forging technique.
Sliding friction test and static-dynamic friction force difference evaluation for the coated specimen (25㎜ × 25㎜) have been conducted. Also Neutral Salt Spray Test for QRS with five types of coating material has been conducted to evaluate the corrosion resistance for each coating material and process. Finally durability test for the coated pinion shaft has been conducted to evaluate the gear strength and friction/abrasion properties.
